The Wisdom of Unca Harlan

Below is a finished potrait of a Ragdoll cat.

The gentleman I plan to write about wasn't too fond of cats, if memory serves. Either that or he was fed up with the many cat books that were circulating at the time. He discovered he loved dogs, and one in particular, the great Abu had a very special place in that big heart of his. But I digress.

Harlan Ellison, my favorite author once said that writing isn't easy. If it were easy, everyone would do it. I know, I tried, and I couldn't write the fantastic fiction he pounded out on his manual typewriter. Yes, Virginia, there was a time people used manual typewriters to write letters, stories and essays. Those were the days my friend. When it comes to writing blogs, I tend to come off rather bland. Its not as easy as one would think. There is a colorlessness to the writing that is irritating both mind and soul. So I got off my lazy keister and decided enough was enough. Write something for Chrissakes!

Easier said than done. How do I make my drawings and paintings sparkle more? What do I write about? One artist said write about your mistakes, not just "Hey, here's my paintings and here's my update." That is a marvelous idea, but then I wondered how far off the track I would go. So many people write about their mistakes, their mental mishaps, their slip ups...it becomes a f*****g confessional. I'm all for writing about how human I am. I just don't want this to become a therapy session. Yet there are times writing is so therapeutic. It can release those demons that have been sitting on your shoulder for so long. For example, why am I not drawing so many sketches of cats? Why am I not regaling my audience with all sorts if paintings? Well, for starters I'm taking care of my parents, I have responsibilities, and I have to schedule things.

Or maybe, genius, you could just get out the sketchbooks and just draw. Just draw. Harlan Ellison just wrote. He wrote thousands of stories without stopping, even wrote in bookstore windows in front of an audience. (However he did also get Neil Gaiman who was visiting him at his home at the time to keep an editor's assistant busy who'd been sent to collect a story Harlan had been stalling on; if you want the story on that, watch "Dreams with Sharp Teeth". That's his biography.) Now what is my point?

That I should just be writing. The subject will come to me, my style will as well. However if I come off a bit cranky, perhaps a bit edgy, it's because I was reading Harlan Ellison. He has that effect on me. I will keep my humor and my good will towards man on this blog. This is after all a page about cats, and they're supposed to calm people.

On that note...

Peace, folks.
